Up from the plains peeks the rock on which this small village is situated. While old times made this into a most valuable defensive position, today's villagers are seeking comfort in the newer village lying at the feet of the rock. Only few families are still holding out up here.
Takrouna's played an important part in World War II, where New Zealand troops fought with heavy losses to make the Germans leave this position. Even today, bullet holes are visible in some buildings.
Standing on the top, there is no problem seeing in all directions. It is clear that the people that built the village appreciated the view.
Zriba is one of a few Berber villages in the Dorsale mountains, and quite attractive seen from certain angles. It rests on a pinnacle of the mountain and everything is attached to the one single road running through the village, and leading to the Zawiyya shrine and mosque.
In Tunisia, the art of vine growing and winemaking dates back to the earliest antiquity. The agronomist Magon, who lived in Carthage at the time of the Phoenicians, recorded in his Treatise of Agronomy viticulture, wine-producing practices that are still in use nowadays. In the Roman mosaics, Dionysos-Bacchus, the god and guardian of wine, contributes to ride high in triumph.
Today, Tunisian wine continues to boast the high repute that the sun, soil and time-honoured Tunisian traditions have conferred on it…
