Tour description
Although the Zocalo is the eye-catcher of the historic city center, the Alameda park, originally the entrance to the young city in colonial times, has since the earthquake of 1985 become a new crown jewel of the center. This walking tour includes guide services, hotel pick-up by car, entrance fees and some tastings of typical Mexican delicacies.
Within one block around this 15 hectare 16th century park, we walk trough three centuries of history. Highlights of the urban landscape are the murals of the art-déco Fine Arts Palace, the Casa de los Azulejos, the Postal Palace, the Palacio Iturbide and the recent Juarez complex by famous architect Legorreta. The miniature China town adds still more color.
After this stroll through Alameda's urban landscape, we plung into the history of mexican art in MUNAL, housed in an extraordinary building projected by general Porfirio Díaz. It not only gives a summary of the valuable paintings and sculptures in Mexico -from copying european styles to the search of an own identity- it often hosts high-quality temporary exhibits.
Optionally, you can choose for an extra visit to one of the worthwhile museums in the area, especially Franz Mayer (colonial art and furniture) or the Popular Crafts Museum (MAP). I can recommend you typical cantinas, a market or a restaurant for lunch or dinner.
