Tour description

Why a tour at Herculaneum?

The city of Greek origin provides a glimpse into the private lives of the romans. It is a small italic town with an orthogonal grid patter of streets, It is located at the foot of Mt Vesuvius and just 4 miles south from Naples and 7 miles north from Pompeii. The town was quite small as the total area within the enclosure was of 20 hectares with a population of 4,000 inhabitants.

Already damaged by the earthquake of 62 AD, the town was violently affected by the 79 AD eruption that covered it under a tick layer of about 15-30 meters of mudslide and pyroclastic material. The exact location of ancient Herculaneum on the top of which the town of Resina had developed, was lost until the 18th century, when some finds from Roman times were brought to light. Among the buildings brought to light we have to remember the Theatre, found at a depth of 26 meters, that could host 3,000 people; noble and luxurious villas mainly in the Southern quarter, with balconies overlooking the sea and the gulf od Naples, and among these the House of Dears, with a bright garden and spacious rooms with colored marble floors.

Among the Public building we have to remember the Temple Augustales with opus sectile mosaics and walls painted with exstraordinary frescoes. The excavated area of the town is 5 hectares. Up to this time we have two decumani (streets east-west) and three cardini (streets north-south), but we can assume the existence of at least two more cardini and on more decumano; the roads have a lava floor from Augustan times and, differently from Pompeii, they do not appear as used from cart wheels, presumably because of limited access to the city due to the narrow roads going downhill towards the sea.

DON'T MISS THE SPECTACULAR HERCULANEUM!
